Why Wool Carpet Is Different to Everything Else

The Fibre That Changed How We Clean

Wool is a protein-based natural fibre — structurally and chemically very different from the synthetic nylon and polyester used in most modern carpet. The outer surface of each wool fibre is made up of microscopic scales (called the cuticle) that overlap like roof tiles. It's this structure that makes wool feel warm, look luxurious, and resist dirt naturally.

But those same scales are also why wool is sensitive to heat and alkaline solutions. When wool fibres are exposed to high pH (alkaline) chemistry or excess moisture, those cuticle scales lock together — a process called felting. Once felted, carpet fibres cannot be separated again. The carpet shrinks, stiffens, and the pile loses its lift permanently. It's an irreversible change.

Standard hot-water extraction solutions run at pH 9–11. Wool is comfortable at pH 4.5–6.5. That gap is why the wrong cleaner in the wrong hands ruins wool carpet — not carelessness, but simply using the same products they'd use on nylon.

What Makes Wool Worth Protecting

Three Things That Go Wrong When Wool Carpet Is Cleaned Incorrectly

These aren't rare edge cases — they happen regularly when non-specialist cleaners use standard synthetic-carpet products on wool. Each one is irreversible or very difficult to fix.

Shrinkage

The most dramatic and most costly of the three. When wool fibres absorb too much water — especially hot water — they swell, the microscopic scales along each fibre lock together, and the fibre permanently contracts. Across a room-sized carpet, this means visible buckling, lifting at the edges and, in severe cases, the carpet pulling away from its tack strips entirely.

Shrinkage is not repairable. There is no way to un-shrink wool carpet fibres once they have felted. The only remedies are expensive restretching (which helps the appearance but doesn't fix the fibre structure) or full replacement. This damage typically results from a cleaner using far too much water combined with high-temperature solution.

Cause: Over-wetting + high-temperature water

Browning / Cellulosic Browning

Brown or yellow discolouration that appears after cleaning — often only visible once the carpet dries, which makes it a nasty surprise. Technically called cellulosic browning or tannin wicking, this happens when natural compounds within the wool fibre (primarily tannins) are dissolved by water or alkaline solution and carried to the surface of the pile during the drying process.

The result looks like large irregular patches of tan or yellow-brown colouration that weren't there before the clean. Homeowners sometimes assume it's a new stain, but it's actually the carpet's own chemistry surfacing. Mild browning can sometimes be treated with wool-safe neutralising solutions, but severe browning may permanently alter the carpet's colour in affected areas.

Felting / Pile Matting

Felting is a microscopic process that produces a very visible result: the carpet pile goes from soft, individual, upright fibres to a flat, matted, tangled surface that won't brush out. It's the same process used intentionally to make felt fabric — when wool fibres are agitated in the presence of water and heat, the cuticle scales along each fibre lock onto neighbouring fibres and can't be separated.

Unlike shrinkage (which affects the whole carpet) felting often appears in localised patches where a cleaner's brush or scrubber applied too much agitation. The affected areas appear flattened and dull while surrounding areas remain normal — which looks worse than if the whole carpet were uniform. Felted areas cannot be restored through brushing, grooming or re-cleaning.

Cause: Alkaline pH + rotary scrubbing agitation + heat

A note on warranty: Most wool carpet manufacturers require that professional cleaning be done using wool-safe methods to maintain any warranty. Using non-specialist cleaners with standard alkaline chemistry can void your carpet's warranty while causing the very damage you were trying to prevent. If your carpet is still under warranty, check the manufacturer's requirements before booking any cleaner.

How We Clean Wool Carpet — Step by Step

Every step in our wool cleaning process exists for a specific reason related to fibre protection. Here's what we do and why we do it differently to standard carpet cleaning.

Fibre Identification & Condition Assessment

Before applying any product, we confirm carpet type — pure wool, blend, or unknown — and assess its condition. We check pile direction, look for existing stains, note any browning or felting, and identify areas of particular concern. This tells us exactly what chemistry and moisture level to use.

Why: Applying even a wool-safe product incorrectly on a compromised carpet can worsen damage. Assessment first.

Dry Soil Removal First

We vacuum thoroughly with a pile-direction-appropriate pass before any moisture goes on the carpet. Wet cleaning over dry soil traps grit deep in the pile and makes it harder to extract. Removing dry soil first means the wet stage works on actual embedded contamination rather than fighting surface dirt.

Why: Up to 80% of carpet soil is dry particulate. Remove it dry, then deal with the bonded contamination.

pH-Neutral Pre-Spray Application

We apply a neutral-pH pre-spray solution — specifically formulated for wool and natural fibres — allowing a controlled dwell time. No alkaline chemistry, no products that bubble or foam aggressively. The pre-spray breaks down oils and bonded soil without attacking the fibre's cuticle structure or stripping lanolin.

Each stain is treated individually with an appropriate wool-safe product. Enzyme treatments for protein stains (blood, urine), oxygen-based treatments for tannin stains (red wine, tea), and solvent-based spot treatment for oil and grease. Every product is tested for wool safety before application.

Why: Spot treatment requires targeted chemistry — one all-purpose spray isn't appropriate for every stain type or every fibre.

Controlled Hot-Water Extraction

Extraction at controlled water temperature — warm, not scalding — with suction calibrated to recover moisture quickly and minimise total water in the pile. We work in pile-direction passes, not back-and-forth random strokes. Total moisture in the carpet is kept as low as possible while still extracting contamination effectively.

Why: Moisture is the enemy of wool. The faster we remove it, the lower the shrinkage and browning risk.

Post-Extraction pH Neutralisation

After extraction, we apply a pH-correcting rinse that restores the carpet's surface chemistry to the ideal range (pH 4.5–6.5) for wool. This final step counteracts any residual chemistry and prevents residue from attracting future soiling — a problem common with carpet cleaners who skip this step to save time.

Why: A residue-free carpet stays clean longer. The rinse step is what separates a lasting result from a 2-week re-soiling.

pH and Wool — Why It's the Most Important Number in Carpet Cleaning

pH is the single most important factor in wool carpet care. If a cleaner doesn't know the pH of the products they're using on your carpet, that's a red flag — regardless of how professional they look or how good their equipment is.

Common misconception: Bicarb of soda (baking soda) is often recommended online as a natural, wool-safe home cleaner. It has a pH of approximately 8.3 — safely outside wool's comfort zone. Regular use of bicarb on wool carpet will gradually degrade the fibre's scale structure. Vinegar (pH ~2.5) is sometimes recommended as a "natural" alternative — also wrong direction. The safest emergency treatment for a fresh spill on wool is plain cold water and blotting with a dry cloth.

How to Look After Wool Carpet Between Professional Cleans

What you do every day has a bigger impact on your wool carpet's lifespan than any single professional clean. These practical tips protect your investment year-round.

Do These Things

  • Vacuum regularly — weekly for high-traffic areas. Wool traps dry soil effectively but that soil abrades fibres if left to accumulate.
  • Vacuum in the direction of pile. Against-pile removes more, but regular with-pile passes are kinder on the fibre structure long-term.
  • Blot liquid spills immediately with a clean, dry, white cloth. Work from the outside edge inward to prevent spreading.
  • Use plain cold water for fresh spills — it's the safest and often most effective first step on wool before any specialist products.
  • Rotate furniture placement every few years to even out wear patterns across the carpet.
  • Use proper carpet protectors under furniture legs — wool can indent under point pressure from thin metal or wooden legs.
  • Keep indoor humidity in a normal range. Very low humidity can make wool fibres brittle; very high humidity can encourage mould growth under the carpet backing.
  • Book professional cleaning every 12–18 months to maintain fibre structure and remove embedded contamination before it causes abrasion damage.

Don't Do These Things

  • Don't rub a spill — rubbing spreads it laterally and pushes it deeper into the pile. Always blot vertically with light pressure.
  • Don't apply bicarb of soda — it's alkaline at pH 8.3 and will degrade wool fibres with repeated use, despite what many internet guides claim.
  • Don't use dish soap or laundry detergent — most are formulated for synthetic materials and have pH levels harmful to wool.
  • Don't use supermarket carpet sprays unless they're specifically labelled wool-safe and you've confirmed the pH is in the right range.
  • Don't use hot water on fresh spills — heat helps bond protein stains (blood, urine) to wool permanently. Always use cold water first.
  • Don't let spills dry before treating them — some stains (red wine, urine, food dye) bond strongly to wool during drying and become significantly harder to remove.
  • Don't allow a cleaner to use a rotary scrubbing machine on your wool carpet — the aggressive circular motion causes felting, especially combined with moisture and heat.
  • Don't assume the carpet is "too old to matter" — correct care preserves heritage wool carpets just as well as new ones.
